Loyal Service Rewarded
'Choir Practice' will no longer be written on calendars or in the diaries of three members of the Church Choir. On Wednesday, 12th February 2003 a ceremony took place to recognise the retirements of Edna Taylor, Doris Cumpstey and Eileen Jacobs. Edna and Doris were retiring after 9 years and 12 years respectively, and Eileen after more than 40 years of service. Each received a Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Loyal Service Certificate commemorating their achievement. Eileen's remarkable service was additionally recognised by an engraved medal.

In making the presentations, Simon Dellow, Organist and Choir Leader, thanked each of them for their dedication over the years, noting that such a long-serving attitude was perhaps a reflection of a bygone era. He paid tribute to their commitment to singing at the 11:15 morning service on Sundays, Choral Evensong and the many other additional services, including numerous weddings, which the Choir are called upon to lead, as well as their regular attendance at practices. Bob added his thanks to the retiring choristers, remarking that over 40 years of service was indeed a very special achievement.

Two questions remain. Firstly, what will Edna, Doris and Eileen now find to do with their Wednesday evenings? And secondly, are you being called to help continue the musical tradition of the 11:15 Sunday morning service at St James'? If so please speak with Simon about joining the Church Choir or Jubilate. Jubilate leads the Common Worship Holy Communion Service on the first Sunday of every month. Singers aged 7 years and over (no upper limit!) are very welcome. The Church Choir leads the Prayer Book Holy Communion and Morning Prayer services on the remaining Sundays of the month, together with Choral Evensong on the fourth Sunday of each month. The two choirs combine for special services and weddings.
